June
Hello everybody!
What a fantastic and busy month we had in Junior and Senior Infants throughout the month of June. The excitement was building every morning as we counted down the final days with our “Final Countdown” board — it gave us something fun to look forward to each day!
We filled our final weeks with loads of exciting activities like chalk drawing, popcorn and movie day, treats, lessons outdoors, and even trips to the playground. The atmosphere was buzzing with fun and learning all at once!
One of the highlights of our month was definitely “Teach the Teacher” day — and what a brilliant day it was! The children took the lead and taught us some amazing skills, including how to make loom bands, how to cycle a bike, and how to make a crocodile mouth out of a cereal box. There were so many other creative ideas, and it was such an exciting and proud day for everyone involved.
We also had a lovely class trip to the playground at Huntington Castle, where we made the most of the sunshine and the fresh air. It was a perfect way to wind down the year together. On another day, we brought our learning outside, and it was such a hit! We especially loved doing our maths activities outdoors, combining fresh air with fun problem-solving.
And of course, how could we forget our school tour? What an incredible day we had! The children took part in all sorts of hands-on activities including giant bubble making, water balloon fun, milking cows, building turf houses, and so much more. It was a truly magical day full of laughter, learning, and adventure.
May
May was a fun and active month in Junior and Senior Infants! We had lots of exciting things happening both inside and outside the classroom.
We began the month by celebrating two special birthdays – Amelia and Maria! Everyone enjoyed singing songs and sharing in the celebrations.
One of the highlights of the month was trying out our brand-new rock climbing wall. The children had so much fun testing their climbing skills and building confidence as they reached new heights. We also started our basketball lessons with Ita every Monday. The boys and girls loved learning how to dribble, pass and shoot the ball through fun games and drills. We also had two fantastic rugby sessions with John, who showed us how to run with the ball and work as a team.
We were very proud to celebrate some special medals in the class this month too. A few of our classmates received sports medals outside of school and we all took time to acknowledge their great achievements. As part of our writing work, we also practised writing our full names outside using colourful chalk. It was a great way to enjoy the fresh air while working on our letters and fine motor skills.
Well done to all the children for their energy, enthusiasm and positivity throughout the month!
April
We had a wonderful month of fun and sunshine this April in Junior and Senior Infants!
One of the highlights of the month was our Easter egg hunt, which we did with the help of the fantastic girls from Fifth and Sixth Class. They were so kind and helpful as we searched high and low for Easter eggs and bars — and we found loads! After all that excitement, we cooled off in the hot spring sunshine with some delicious Twister ice pops.
We also got creative by designing our very own Easter decorations to hang on trees. The boys and girls worked so carefully and added beautiful colours and sparkles.
We also started our exciting school skipping challenge! Every day we head out to the yard to practise skipping and we are getting better and better each time.
After the Easter fun at school, we enjoyed a lovely two-week break to rest, recharge and to celebrate Easter with our families.
Well done to all the Junior and Senior Infants for another fantastic month of learning, playing and growing!
March
We had a very busy month this March in Junior and Senior Infants!
We kicked off the month by celebrating Lá Glas with great fun and energy. We learned the Hokey Pokey song as Gaeilge and had a blast dancing and singing along as Gaeilge too. We also tried out some Irish dancing and the boys and girls gave it their all.
Another highlight of the month was reaching our big goal of 20 stars on our class chart. To celebrate, we had a special pyjama morning where everyone wore their cosiest pyjamas and enjoyed a breakfast party. We had a delicious selection of cereals, waffles, pancakes and croissants — there wasn’t a crumb left!
Throughout March, we also learned lots of new songs and poems. The children really enjoyed practising their new verses and performing them for each other.
In religion, we spent time learning all about St. Patrick and why he is so special to the people of Ireland. We also talked about the meaning of Easter and how it is celebrated in the church. The children were full of great questions and ideas during our lessons.
To top it all off, we had a few very sunny, warm days and we made the most of the weather by getting outdoors for some extra play and fresh air.
Well done to all the Junior and Senior Infants for their fantastic efforts this month!
February
We had a blast this February in junior and senior infants.
We celebrated Tiernan & Ella’s birthdays this month. We also celebrated Valentine’s Day with some confetti, headbands and sweets. We made some beautiful bees and cards to bring home.
We started reading buddies each day where the children sit with their partners and take turns reading our book of the week.
We did some lovely floor colouring where we had to work collaboratively on a very long piece of paper.
During our RSE lessons, we learned all out how to bath a baby. The children took turns holding the doll and being very careful!
In maths, we made some fun number blocks. We have been working so hard on learning all of the numbers up to 10. To show this, we used our class Lego to make towers of each number.
January
We had a very short January here in junior & senior infants due to our Christmas holidays & the snow!
We had some very special birthdays this month. First was Billy, followed by Ethan and Georgia and finally we celebrated Cain.
We have been learning all about healthy & unhealthy foods this month too. We had a special afternoon of tasting fruit & vegetables. This was so fun, as we got to try out foods that we have never tasted before. The pineapple and pomegranate was a huge hit.
Dancing was our topic of the month in PE. We learned lots of guided dances and also some freestyling.
December
We had a magical December here in junior and senior infants!
We had our Christmas Carol Service, which took place in the church. All of the children absolutely loved this and enjoyed singing all of the festive songs.
We wore our Christmas jumpers and went on a lovely walk to Huntington Castle on our last day before the holidays.
We got very messy and made indoor snow. We also tested our science minds and created some reindeer balloon races.
Trixie the elf came to visit us. She gave us lots of laughs and taught us lots of kind acts.
November
November was a very busy month in Junior and Senior infants.
We began using our reading lights in class. These have really helped us to follow each word/sound carefully in our books. The children loved picking out their colours and it really helped us to focus during our independent reading time.
Everywhere Bear was introduced to the class and he also visited some children’s homes by spending the weekend with them. The children have loved sharing stories of their own memories with Everywhere Bear!
We have been learning all about 2D shapes in Maths. We went on a shapes hunt around the school. Each group was given a specific shape to ‘hunt’. Senior infants were the leaders and they each guided a team of junior infants. Everyone showed great leadership and teamwork!
We used our aprons for the very first time this month while painting during art time.
Amelia, in our class, won a certificate and trophy at her dance class. She loved bringing this in to show to us. Well done Amelia!
Finally, we had a ‘Talent Show Thursday’ display during November. Each child got up in front of the class to show their very own talents. There was lots of dancing, drawing, singing and even football skills displayed. Oisín was very brave and showed us a science experiment he knew – How to Make a Witches Potion – very spooky!
October
Hi All,
We were very busy this month in junior & senior infants.
We used our classroom ‘conversation station’ to discuss our new topics of autumn and hibernation. The children used our pretend class microphones to create a TV news interview discussing what they had learned about these topics.
We painted some lovely squirrels to display in our classroom and we also went on a fantastic leaf hunt around the pitch.
Ella & Lucy were two of many winners during maths week. We really loved created some houses out of shapes with some of the 5th & 6th class children.
We celebrated two very special birthdays. Lee & Robin loved sitting on the birthday chair on their special days.
Finally, our Halloween walk to the castle was a huge success. The children loved seeing all of the children and teachers who dressed up and it was a great day!
September
Welcome to the first month of the school year here in Ms. Wadding’s Junior and Senior Infant’s class. We have had the busiest month learning lots of new things and helping our new Junior Infants to settle into primary school life.
We loved our daily movement breaks, especially table drumming where we used foam drums on our classroom tables. We have been drumming to the popular songs ‘Shake It Off’ &‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’.
As our new Junior Infants went home at 12pm for the first few weeks of school, our Senior Infants visited the Rainbow Room in our school on some afternoons. They loved playing with the sensory toys and we also had a short guided meditation session, which they all loved.
Our Junior Infants have been busy learning their phonics sounds through the Jolly Phonics programme. So far, they have learned the sounds of s, a, t, i and p through songs and stories. They are amazing!
Our Senior Infants have been learning their blue tricky words and have completed lots of fun games while doing this, such as fishing for the tricky words using magnetic fishing rod toys.
Our very own Senior Infant, Tiernan Kavanagh, spent one of his weekends at home learning about the flags of the world. He was so excited to show us the flags he made at home. We are so proud of him. Well done Tiernan!
