2022-2023 2ND CLASS

Welcome to Ms. Deegan’s class!

Take a look at what we got up to this year.

June was a very busy and fun month in Second Class. We went on our School Tour to Castlecomer Discovery Park. We got to do the tree top adventure and some archery. We all really enjoyed the day.
In June we also had Active Week, there were so many fun activities, we had a teacher swap where Mrs. O’ Meara took 2nd class for PE, hip-hop, basketball, sports day, a basketball league, tennis and yoga to name a few. We all had so much fun getting active and involved in all of the different activities.
In the classroom we were focusing on Summer, we learned about keeping safe around water and looked at the changes we noticed in nature again, we also did lots of fun summer art.
We can’t believe that the year is over all ready but we are all really looking forward to our holidays and the challenges that Third Class will bring in September!


May was a very special month in Second Class. The boys and girls made their First Holy Communion on Sunday the 21st of May in St Brigid’s Church. They all did a wonderful job and should be extremely proud of themselves. They created beautiful artwork that was displayed in the Church on their special day. Amongst all of the preparation for the First Holy Communion the
boys and girls were also very busy in the classroom. They have really enjoyed their basketball coaching on Mondays, it’s lots of fun learning new skills.

They have been working really hard at Irish and created some beautiful bunting on the topic of ‘Mé Féin’.

Saoirse was the lucky class
winner of the poster competition that was run by the Green Schools Committee, well done Saoirse!

In Maths they have been revising their subtraction and learning all about area. In PE we have been practicing our athletics, we have been focusing on running and relays.

May was also the month of our Marathon challenge, we all took part and gave it our best effort, most importantly we had lots of fun.

We are so excited for our last month of school and all of the fun that is to come!


April flew by in 2nd class, we were all so glad to see our friends again after the Easter holidays. We loved getting outside in the fine weather for PE practising our throwing and catching skills. We were also lucky enough to have some GAA coaching with our three wonderful TY students.

We’ve been working really hard across all of our subjects, we started making our very own recipe book in English to showcase our wonderful procedural writing.

In art we also studied the work of Georgia O’Keefe and recreated some of her own flower paintings whilst putting our own creative twist on them.

We have also been extremely busy preparing for our First Holy Communion next month, we are learning our prayers and getting our beautiful artwork ready.


March was a very special month in second class as the boys and girls made their First Penance. They had worked so hard preparing, learning their prayers, completing their beautiful artwork and practicing their songs for the night. All of their hard work paid off and it was a great success, we are so proud of them. We also celebrated World Book Day at the beginning of the month, there were lots of wonderful costumes as we all celebrated reading and our favourite books.

We had some unusual visitors to our school when Deerpark Exotics came by, we got to see animals of all different kinds like, chinchillas, hedgehogs, lizards, a bawn owl and even some snakes just to name a few. We learned so much about all of the different animals and there was great excitement when we got to pet some of them.

In the classroom we have been working extremely hard across all of our subjects. We have really enjoyed learning all about plants and how they grow, we planted our own cress seeds and watched them grow day by day. We even conducted a little experiment to see what would happen if we didn’t water seeds and if they didn’t get any sunlight, it was so interesting comparing the different results.

We are all looking forward to the Easter Holidays and can’t wait for more fun and learning when we get back.


This month was full of celebrations in Second Class. We started off the month by celebrating St.Brigid’s Day, we made some lovely St. Brigid’s crosses made from pipe cleaners that were woven together to produce the final result.

We also celebrated Grandparents Day with a prayer service and a visit to our classroom, it was a great day and we loved welcoming our grandparents to share our beautiful acrostic poems and to show them all the great work we have been doing. We also performed “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr Seuss for them, we hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.

Next up was Valentine’s Day, we made some beautiful cards ,thanks to Wexford Education Support Centre and Nadia Corrigan, who put on a great workshop through Zoom.

We all really enjoyed Pancake Tuesday, we made some delicious pancakes and
enjoyed eating them with some of our favourite toppings. We have also been working very hard at all of our subjects, we really liked learning about Length in Maths this month.

Finally, we have been busy preparing for our First Penance which we will be celebrating next month, we are learning our prayers, completing our art work and practicing our beautiful singing for the big day.


January was another busy month in Second Class, we are so refreshed after our Christmas holidays.
We started off the year with lots of exploration around Space and The First Moon landing. We learned all about Neil Armstrong and created some fabulous space themed art work. We also learned about how craters are formed on the moon through a fun Science experiment.
Furthermore, we learned all about China, including their wonderful New Year celebrations. We wrote some fantastic reports on the Chinese New Year, The Lantern Festival and Dragon Boat Racing.
We are very excited to see what February will bring as we begin our preparation for our First Penance.


This month has been extremely busy in Second Class. We spent a lot of time practicing for our Carol Service, all our hard work paid off. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

In Maths we have been learning all about place value and renaming. We have also been learning all about Money, we set up our very own shop in class and took it in turns working as the shop keeper. We had to work out how much the items cost and give back the correct change as well.

In History we have been learning all about toys in the past. We read a story called the Toymaker, and made a story board sequencing all the events that happened. We also worked altogether to put together a timeline of the most popular toys over the years.

In Science, we have had great fun learning all about magnets. We used what we had learned about magnets to design and create our own fishing board games. We all came up with different ideas and all our games worked so well. We even got to chance to play the games the other groups had made.

In Geography, we have been learning about Christmas around the world. In pairs we created great projects showcasing different traditions in lots of different countries. We presented our projects to the class to share all that we had learned. We are so proud of the projects that we created.

The highlight of the month was the hot chocolate party we earned after our excellent work and behaviour over the last few weeks. We are all looking forward to our Christmas holidays and a well-earned rest.


This November Second class have been working really hard across all areas of the Curriculum, in Maths we explored all our topics through fun, hands on activities. We looked at odd and even numbers and patterns to name a few.

In Art we have been looking at the work of Piet Mondrian, a Dutch painter, we re-created his work.

In Science we are learning all about different, materials. We worked like real scientists by planning and conducting a fair test investigation, to see which
material would keep Guzzler’s hot chocolate warmest for longest.


It has been another busy month in Second Class, we have learned all about Autumn and hibernation. We designed and created our own hibernation stations for hedgehogs by collecting suitable materials and built them outside. We are really enjoying our Music Generation Guitar lessons, we are improving so much each week!

We also celebrated Maths Week this month, there were lots of fun games and activities organised for us, we had a great time. We did an online table quiz and Fifth and Sixth class helped us to complete a Maths trail around the school,
as well as the daily Maths puzzles.

There have been lots of opportunities for us to work together in groups through hands on activities, we are all excited for midterm and can’t wait for more
learning in November.


September has been a very busy month for our Second-class pupils as we began to settle back into a routine. We started our swimming lessons which we are all really enjoying and we have worked really hard at all our other curricular subjects too.
