School Calendar

Welcome to Ms. Coogan’s class!

Take a look at what we got up to this year.

In March we planted peas, radish and salad leaves and have been watching them grow in our classroom. It was very interesting to see which grew at a faster rate.

We celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge by taking part in some Tráth Na gCeist, Ceilí and by creating our own board games as Gaeilge! We also took part in a huge Kahoot quiz with many other schools for Engineers Week, we found out lots about what Engineers do and what it would be like to have a future career in that area.

Spring has Sprung! We celebrated St. Brigid’s Day on February 1st by learning about her life and the traditions that have followed. We wrote poems about St. Brigid and her life and made St. Brigid’s Day crosses using pipe cleaners.

We were learning all about the Aztecs in History, we completed projects in pairs using the school laptops to research and type up our projects. We used clay to make our own Aztec shields. We also had a home-based project where we built Aztec Temple Pyramids using many different materials, such as wood, styrofoam, clay, lego and even cake! We followed criteria similar to the Aztecs. They turned out fantastic and we enjoyed some cake afterwards!

We chose the title of our entry for the ESB Science Blast. We will be carrying out experiments to see if we can make plastic from dairy products such as milk or cheese. We are very excited to get stuck in.

We have been working on writing reports in English. We have been focusing on topics that interest us such as ‘Sea Creatures’ and ‘Superheroes and Villains’. We have been using the school laptops to research for our reports and will soon begin to type these up.

We have been learning about Onomatopoeia to make our writing more exciting. We created some very cool pieces of art to inspire our future writing. We used different textures to create a funky background and newspaper to make our words pop!

During Catholic Schools week we began thinking about our Confirmation, reading parables and thinking of possible Confirmation names. We had a lovely visit from Fr. Pat Hughes about the importance of Cathloic values and our upcoming Sacrament. Wednesday the 26th of January was Grandparents Day. We watched a live stream Mass from Askea Parish and celebrated and remembered our grandparents. Following this we wrote our own prayers, decorated candles and went on a class nature walk. We will always keep our grandparents and people special to us in our hearts. We even spotted some early signs of Spring along the way.

We completed a project on ‘Women Who Had History’. We learned about remarkable women including Amelia Earhart, Anne Frank, and our own Katie Taylor.

We have also been busy decorating our classroom and school for Christmas. We have been learning about Advent and the different Advent traditions

We created Christmas tree decorations using clay, paint and fabric in art.

We started off our exciting year of project work with a fantastic project on Flooding. The aim was to build a home that would sustain the effects of flooding. We had some fantastic homes brought in. Some made of wood, plastic, foam, Styrofoam and even Lego!

We had great fun testing the houses out in water and seeing how they reacted.

We have been learning guitar with Music Generation and have brought our guitars home to continue practicing. We are really fortunate to have this opportunity to learn guitar in school!
