In our school we consider participation in sporting activities to be very important. Pupils are encouraged to be active at all break times. They enjoy playing ball games, skipping and playground games. We are very fortunate to have a basketball court, two football pitches, a soft play area with a slide, monkey bars, a fireman pole, a balance bridge and a climbing rope in addition to the front area of our school. We also have the use of St. Brigid’s hall for indoor PE activities.

Football, camogie/hurling, basketball and soccer training is provided by the teachers during lunch break. In addition to this training, Ita O’ Donoghue provides basketball training and the local GAA coaches provide training in football and hurling during the school year. During the 2018 school year Ger from Carlow GAA was training the boys and girls from 2nd class up every Thursday. It started with football training and then moved onto hurling. Furthermore, the children participate in all the Cumann na mBunscoil football, hurling and camogie leagues and in the basketball and soccer league.

All pupils enjoy our yearly Active School Week, including our sports day. At the end of the year the school tours take place. They are very active events with the senior pupils participating in water based activities and outdoor pursuits.

Pupils from 1st to 6th class and all pupils in the ASD classes also avail of 10 weeks swimming instruction each year. This school year swimming will start on Tuesday 10 September. We decided to go with Graiguecullen Pool again as they teach the PAWS Programme and children receive certification.

It is essential that two parents are available to travel each swimming day as assistance is required and we also need two adults in each dressing room. Parents need to be Garda vetted – forms are available in the office. We depend on your generosity to volunteer to assist with the swimming each week.

Swimming is an important strand of the PE curriculum and therefore all pupils are expected to attend unless there is a medical reason for non-attendance. If there is a medical reason for abstention from swimming lessons it is essential that a medical cert is supplied to the school. Any child who is occasionally unable to go swimming due to illness will be supervised in the school and given work to do. However, it is hoped that it will not be necessary for any pupil to miss swimming on a regular basis.

There were both 5th and 6th class girls on the team and each player did their very best. At ten seconds to go, we were ahead by one basket when Kildavin came back and scored! We couldn’t believe our luck - we had to play three minutes extra time! In those three minutes we gave everything and in the end we won by three points!
